The Braids Club Issue #3: Kinky Coily Glam (4c Braid Styles)

Kinky Coil Glam

'Texture will never go out of style.'

Voluminous, soft-lustred and versatile, here at The Braids Company, our love for 4c hair runs deep. I love 4c hair and that love is hard fought. It took a long time to not only accept my hair, but to see it as beautiful and glamourous. There was no style inspiration or examples of 4c hair in magazines, tv shows or movies. Every black woman I saw on screen has either loose curls, straightened or relaxed hair.

For a moment it felt like 4c hair was something rare but unloveable and made to be manipulated into something it's not. Once I embraced my hair in its natural state, I decided to do an experiment one year, to see how long I would go without seeing anyone else, besides myself, with 4c hair in its natural state. Whether in an advert or film or in real life, I longed to see 4c hair in its beautiful natural form and waited for two years with no luck.

By the end of my experiment, I knew that when I would eventually be part of the change to be inclusive and celebratory of 4c hair. In that spirit, we're going to do a rundown of styles that allow you to keep 4c hair in its natural state with little to not manipulation, and no need for heat and straightening.

This blogpost is dedicated to the younger me, and the many girls like her that need to be reminded of the beauty of their hair texture and how beautiful it is.

Chunky Twists

Senegalese twists are a great protective style with a soft-sheen, perfect for a kinky-coily hair texture. Using our kinky curly hair texture 'Selkie', start twists with a three strand braid until hair is covered. Merge three-strands into two and twist hair on itself and then again around each strand in a rope pattern.

Crochet Silk Press

Crochet is probably my favourite braid style. Low maintenance, versatile and a quick style, the crochet silk press is the perfect way to have a straight style without heat.
Cornrow your hair in small neat rows. If intending on having a leave out, section in a vixen pattern with one main middle parting towards the crown and a row of hair around the forehead and nape.

Using a crochet hook, insert our straight bulk hair style 'Brona'. Triple-tie to prevent shedding.

Cut and shape, framing and backcombing the base of the crocheted hair to create a diffused look.

Faux Locs

Faux Locs are a great 'double protection' style as you can braid your hair by itself and then wrap the hair. This creates less tension on your strands and distributes the weight of the hair along the braid's length.

Plait box braids with own hair in intended pattern. For length, add our braid hair 'Solana', Using a latch crochet hook, insert our kinky curly hair 'Selkie' until midway through the length of the hair.

Depending on how you want your tension, wrap the inner braided hair until covered, down the shaft of the braid.

Seal with wig glue. Style can also be done in a hybrid style with box braids along the front and nape of the hair, and crochet on the inner part of the hair.

Whether you're doing crochet or box braids, The Braids Company has everything you need for an easy 4c-friendly braid style.
